12 Common Misconceptions About Pool Construction

Pool construction is often a mystery to anyone who hasn’t had to endure it, and even those who had a pool built 10 or 20 years ago are unfamiliar with current construction standards, time lines and processes. Stay in the loop by familiarizing yourself with these 12 common misconceptions about pool construction:

1. Pools Increase Property Value

While this may be true in some cases, don’t build a pool just to increase your property value. Focus primarily on your own enjoyment and how the pool will add to the existing or pending atmosphere of your backyard or garden.

2. Pool Construction Takes Months

We’ve all heard the nightmare’ish stories, but this simply isn’t true. Your pool can be built in a matter of weeks (i.e. concrete and a complicated pool design) or even a matter of days (fiberglass).

3. Inground Pools are Too Expensive

Though above ground pools are the less expensive option, an inground pool built by an expert may very well be the most economical choice for most homeowners.

4. Licensing Is Required for Pool Builders

Sadly, anyone (including homeowners) can build their own pool, which leads to many less than reputable pool companies disappointing innocent and unassuming homeowners with their shoddy workmanship.

5. Permits Are Not Required for Home Owners

This couldn’t bee less true. Homeowners certainly need a permit, and your swimming pool builder should be able to better advise you on obtaining a permit.

6. The Swimming Pool Builder Guarantee Lasts After the Business Collapses

False! If your pool builder goes under, any guarantees that are with them directly will no longer be valid (product guarantees, however, will likely still be valid until the time they expire).

7. Pools are a Great DIY Project

Inground pools, and even above ground pools, are best built and handled by a professional. Try to do it yourself and you’re bound to suffer harsh economical setbacks and personal disappointments over the next several years.

8. Pools Require Too Much Maintenance

Not even close! As long as the homeowner is equipped with the right stuff and properly maintains the pool every week, maintenance can take as little as 10 minutes every week.

9. Pools Need to be Closed for Winter

This is an individual choice rather than a requirement. If you plan on leaving town or not using your pool over the fall or winter, then by all means close it – but continue to maintain it in the meantime.

10.  Emptying the Pool is Part of Regular Maintenance

Absolutely not! In fact, most pool builders will strongly advise pool owners against emptying their pools as it can cause irreparable damage to their pool’s structure.

11. A Clean Pool Smells like Chlorine

Not even close. If your pool has a strong “chlorine” smell, then it’s likely full of chloramines and needs to be cleaned via shocking.

12. Pools are Expensive to Operate

Undoubtedly a pool will increase your bills, but it doesn’t need to be by leaps and bounds. Today there are a number of energy efficient pumps to select from and that can be added during or after pool construction, as well as solar-heating pool covers to help cut back on any heating costs.

Swimming Pool Terms You Should Know: What are Scuppers?

When it comes to pools, there are some words that you need to know. Filters, pumps, chlorine and pH… these are all common terms that even the most unversed pool owner often knows. But one term which often falls by the wayside is the term “scupper”. Just what is a scupper and why is it important?

Swimming Pool Terms You Should Know: What are Scuppers? | Aquapoolco Plus Mississippi

What Is A Scupper?

The term “scupper” has a nautical origin. Before they were incorporated into pool design, scuppers referred to as an opening or a slot on the boat deck which allowed for water to drain from the boat decking.

Scuppers in swimming pool design work very much in the same way. With use of the scuppers, the water is able to flow directly into the pool. Scuppers were initially simple and practical in nature, but now you can find scuppers in a variety of different designs and created with a variety of purposes. For example, the motion of the water can be altered through a scupper so that the water is more tantalizing to both your eyes and ears.

Scuppers: A Popular Pool Upgrade

Scuppers are popular for a number of reasons, though one of the most compelling is their inexpensive qualities. Scuppers are cheap to operate, and can be as simple or as ornate as you’d like. Either way, bathers are treated to that soothing running water sound that can allow any backyard dweller to imagine as if they are lost in their own private oasis.

What also makes scuppers such a popular upgrade option is the variety of designs that they come in. You can find scuppers as:

  • A waterfall design
  • A spitting spout design
  • A spilling fountain design
  • A bubbling brook design

Each of these designs can be arranged in such a way to create an intrinsic and completely customized design to truly enliven your pool and garden’s atmosphere.

Grilled Teriyaki Eggplant

Eggplant is the perfect vegetarian alternative for barbecues, given that it has a natural rich, smokey flavor. Though it can be grilled alone, placing eggplant in this teriyaki prior to grilling it is sure to please. For this recipe from Inhabitat, you’ll need:

  • ¼ Cup soy sauce
  • ¼ Cup sake
  • 2 tsp sesame oil
  • 3 Tbsp raw sugar
  • 2 Tbsp rice vinegar
  • 2-3 cloves crushed garlic
  • Grated ginger to taste

To create this marinate, simply mix all of the above ingredients together. Slice the eggplant, and apply either during grilling, or prior to grilling for some added flavor!

Stuffed BBQ Peppers

This recipe from the BBC website can either act as a great main dish for vegetarians or a side accompaniment for any other meal. For this recipe you’ll need:

  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • 50g pine nuts
  • Approx ¾ Cup long grain rice
  • 2 chopped garlic cloves
  • 350ml vegetable stock
  • 1 bunch of thinly sliced spring onions
  • Approx ¾ Cup cherry tomatoes
  • ¾ Cup mozzarella, chopped
  • Approx ¾ Cup Gorgonzola
  • Handful of parsley, chopped
  • Handful of basil, chopped
  • 3 red peppers
  • 3 yellow peppers
  • String

Begin by heating the olive oil in a medium pan, and then fry the pine nuts until they are toasted. Add the rice, and fry until glossy. Stir in the garlic, add the vegetable stock, and bring everything to a boil. Cover and then cook for 10 minutes or until the rice is tender. Remove the pan from heat to allow it to cool, and then stir in the spring onions, cherry tomatoes, mozzarella, Gorgonzola and fresh herbs.

Now it’s time to stuff the peppers. Cut the stalk from the pepper, remove it, and then make a slit length-wise. Remove the seeds and membrane, and then spoon the filling into the cavity.

Take about 2-3 feet of kitchen string and wrap it around the pepper stalk numerous times, tying it firmly so that the filling is secured. Then barbecue the peppers over medium heat for 15 to 20 minutes, turning gently so that the peppers are browned evenly.

7 Signs You Should Invest in a Swimming Pool Remodel

pool remodel

If you’re unsatisfied with your pool or staring out at it and feel as if it’s missing a certain je ne sais quoi, then you’re pool is likely a good candidate for a pool remodel.  Here are 7 signs that clearly show that you’re in need of a swimming pool renovation this spring or summer:

1. Make It Your Own

Should you have purchased a home with a pool already in the backyard, then it likely was customized to meet the preferences of the previous tenants.  Some quick and easy pool renovations can turn that pond of water into your own personalized sanctuary.

2. Matching your Backyard Atmosphere

If you have the same pool from 10 or 20 years ago, there’s a good chance that your backyard looks a lot more updated than your pool and that your swimming pool is in desperate need of a pool remodel.

3. Updating and Upgrading Features

Hot new pool features are one of the top reasons why pool owners consider a swimming pool remodel.  Fairly economical compared to other renovations, adding or altering the current features of you pool can keep it looking fresh and updated.

4. Improving your Finish

One of the top pool remodeling ideas is the finish of the pool. This is a fairly easy way to make a drastic change to your swimming pool and patio area without completely changing your backyard.

5. Safety Improvements

Safety precautions are always a worthwhile pool remodel.  If you don’t already have a 5 foot fence with a self latching and closing gate surrounding your pool, add one.  Consider adding an alarm as well for additional security.

6. Save Money

Yes, a swimming pool remodel can actually save you money, particularly if you’re switching to a more energy efficient pool pump (these use anywhere from 30-45% less energy than a standard pump) or adding a pool cover to reduce heating costs and reduce water loss.

7. Encourage Friend and Family Gatherings

Having a more “people friendly” swimming pool that includes a beach entry and shallow area, or that has a nearby patio, is a great remodeling idea to encourage the interaction between family and friends.

The Worst Advice We’ve Ever Heard About Pool Maintenance

Whether it’s a good friend or family member or a less than stellar swimming pool maintenance company, we’ve all fallen victim to bad pool maintenance advice. We’ve put our heads together and come up with the worst advice we’ve ever heard so that you can protect yourself – and your pool – in the future:

Maintaining Fencing Around a Pool Destroys Property Value

As a matter of fact, the exact opposite is true. While having a wide open pool may look better, everyone knows that in order to keep children, pets, and just about anyone safe and to prevent any injuries or lawsuits that a fence around the pool is absolutely necessary. This is why pools with a fence around them can actually increase your property value rather than take away from it.

Draining Your Pool Is Good Maintenance

Whoever told you to drain your pool did you a grave disservice. If your pool walls didn’t collapse in on themselves after doing so, then you’re one of the few lucky ones. But even letting your waters drop below water level can cause irreparable damage to the structure of your pool, which can cost you in ways which you can’t even imagine over the next many years. So in case you were wondering, draining your pool is not and should never be part of a regular maintenance routine. The construction of your pool walls is dependent upon that constant and continuous water pressure.

“Closed” Pools Require No Maintenance

Even if you’ve closed up your pool during the winter, you should still be out there every week testing the water and maintaining water levels. Neglect to do so and you’ll undoubtedly be left with a lot of time consuming (and possibly costly!) maintenance duties once you decide to take a dip!

How to Solve the 3 Biggest Problems with Pool Water

3 biggest pool problems

Whether you’re a new pool owner or a seasoned pool veteran, knowing what the 3 most common problems that your pool water may face will keep you well prepared should you face any of the following problems, starting with:

1. Cloudy Pool Water

When it comes to cloudy pool water, the issue may be caused by one of two things:

a) The pool water chemistry is imbalanced

b) The filter isn’t functioning properly

When it comes to your pool water and its chemistry, it’s likely due to a high pH or too much stabilized chlorine in the water. Either lower the pH by using dry acid until optimal chemistry is obtained, or replace some stabilizer with water to increase it.

In regards to the filter, start off by backwashing it (if any parts require repair or replacement, do so). Increase your free chlorine levels to 10 PPM and then polish your water off with a clarifier.

2. Green Pool Water

Green water is a clear indication of algae. This suggests that your chlorine levels are too low or that the chlorine has become ineffective.

To solve this problem, shock your waters with unstabilized chlorine to kill off any algae, and then brush off any algae from the sides and bottom of the pool. After a day has passed, backwash your filters to clear out any dead algae and use clarifier to clean up the water.

3. Stinging Eyes and Skin Irritation

If you or your guests are suffering from stinging eyes, itchy and irritated skin, and/or a sore throat while in your pool, this is a clear indication that your pH levels are off or that your chloramine levels are too high. Dry acid can be used to lower the pH and soda ash to raise it, while superchlorinating your pool can break down any chloramines and restore your pool water chemistry.

6 Tips for National Water Safety Month

national water safety month

With summer right around the corner, no time is better than in the month of May to be America’s National Water Safety Month. During this month, pool owners and water lovers should put a concentrated focus on teaching and reminding ourselves and others on how to behave responsibly in the water for the safety of everyone. You can kick start your list with our 6 water safety tips for how to stay safe around your pool and outdoor living space this spring and summer, starting with:

1. Install a Fence

Every pool should have a five-foot high fence surrounding it along with a self closing and self latching gate. If you currently have one, do a walk around to make sure that it isn’t in any need of repair.

2. Install Alarms

If you already have a fence, consider installing an alarm. There are a number of alarms that will alert you to not only when gates are opened, but when anything or anyone may be in the pool area (such as a pet).

3. Designate a Watcher

Whenever anyone’s in the pool, regardless of their age, someone should be designated as the “water” to monitor children, teens, and even adults in the pool. Better yet, assign children “water buddies” so they can always keep an eye on one friend to make sure that they’re staying safe near the pool.

4. Put Down the Phone

Having a mobile phone by the pool is handy in case of emergency, but parents and guardians should have a “hands off” policy when it comes to their phones if they’re the assigned water or water guardian. Just a quick glance away can result in a tragic accident!

5. Restock your First Aid Kit

A first aid kit should be poolside at all times. Open it up and make sure that you have enough supplies in the event that someone does become injured.

6. Check The Pool First for Missing People

Our last of the water safety tips for National Water Safety Month may be the most important of all. If anyone should ever go missing from sight the first place to look is the pool. Every second counts should anyone be under water, so this is the first place which parents, guardians, and “water buddies” should be advised to look.

What is an Infinity Pool?

infinity pool

Looking for a way to add a touch of naturalistic elegance to your pool? Or perhaps you’re seeking a luxurious oasis that resembles that which can be found on the properties of 5-star resorts. If either is what you crave, then an infinity pool is sure to hit the mark.

Infinity Pools Defined

Also referred to a zero edge, negative edge or a vanishing edge style of pool, an infinity pool is one which is able to produce a stunning effect of a pool’s waters extending forever towards the horizon for a limitless amount of time, thus the “infinity” term that comes with this design. The term is also often used to describe any perimeter overflow pools.

Where This Pool Design Works Best

There are two obvious situations where the infinity design will work best:

When pool waters are able to merge with another body of water, such as an ocean or a lake
When pool waters are able to merge with the sky (i.e. if the pool is on a hillside)

But infinity pools are actually far more diverse than most realize. Most homeowners may not have the most picturesque backdrop apart from their very own backyard or garden. Having an infinity pool which extends to a very beautiful or scenic part of the yard can be extremely complimentary to your landscaping. The infinity pool design can act like a giant mirror, reflecting the most beautiful parts of your backyard and surrounding area.

Having a raised spa or pool featuring an infinity edge which then drops down to a lower level pool, pond or fountain is also an incredibly attractive way to incorporate this hot feature into your current or future pool. Add in a few water features, such as spouting jets, and you’ll have a resort style infinity pool.

5 Ways to Shed the Pounds for Gulfport Pool Season

Pool season is just around the corner, which means so is swimsuit season. Take advantage of the time that is left to get into tiptop shape! Here are several small tips that can make a big difference in the way you feel in your swimsuit.

Eat More Often

weight loss, AquaPoolCo

You read that right. Rather than eating three large meals each day, keep your metabolism working by eating six smaller, healthy meals. By eating this way your blood sugar is regulated, and you feel less hungry during the day. It is important to note that reducing your caloric intake is important to weight loss, so while you are eating six meals a day, they should not be huge meals, snacks rather. Each meal should include healthy, nutritious foods. Reliable snacks include yogurt, nuts, eggs, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

H20

Water is one of the strongest weight loss tools you have. The benefits of being well-hydrated are endless. To help control portions, drink two 8 ounce glasses of water before each meal. This will help to make you feel fuller causing you to consume less.  Additionally, water is great for improving skin appearance, controlling bloating, and can reduce the appearance of cellulite. If you get tired of drinking water all day, spice it up by adding slices of fresh fruit and herbs. Mint and lemon is great combination!

Get Moving

Exercise is extremely important for weight loss, as well as for your overall health. If you do not exercise currently, start by aiming for three 30 to 45 minute sessions each week. Go for a power walk, run, bike ride, or head to the gym. You can make small changes that can really power up your weight loss. For example, park further away in the parking lot, take the stairs at work, or eat your lunch while taking a 30 minute stroll during the day. If you currently exercise, try to increase your routine by five or ten minutes to get the extra burn.

Weights

Many people don’t realize that by strength training, you can actually lose more pounds. For every three pounds of muscle you gain, you burn approximately 120 more calories a day without doing anything. That doesn’t mean forfeit your cardio routine, but try adding weights to your routine. For an extra burn, try switching between bursts of cardio and weights during each workout session.

Stand Up Straight

For an instant appearance of pounds lost, stand up straight! Many people don’t realize how much they can slump over during the day. By simply standing up straight you can appear taller and leaner. Not only is it good for appearance, but it is actually better for your back to stand up straight. So shoulders back, stomach in, smile, and feel great!
