How to Detect a Leak in Your Pool

During the summer months, many pool owners fail to realize that evaporation or splashing may be the culprit behind their so-called leaking pool. Before running to the phone and calling up a pool restoration company with a concern about whether or not your pool may be leaking, pool owners can save themselves a nice little pile of cash by trying to detect the leak themselves through these steps below:

Check the Obvious Culprits

If you think that you may have a leak on you hands, check the following before thinking about pool remodeling:

  • Look at the pump, filter, heater and pipe valves and check them for any leaks
  • Look for any wet areas around the pool, and for any wet soil, sunken or eroding areas
  • If you have a vinyl liner pool, look for any tears or separations around any of the skimmers, fittings, cleaner lines, returns, lights, steps and corners

If No Obvious Leakage…

If none of the above areas reveal obvious leakage, then you can try to detect a leak through either of the two following ways:

  • Place a bucket that’s filled with pool water on a pool step (weigh it down with a brick to hold it stead).  Make sure that the water level of the bucket and the pool water are the same, and mark them. Check it 24 hours, and if there is a greater drop outside of the bucket, then it may be time to call a pool restoration specialist.  Redo the test with the pump turned on, or with the pump turned off (depending on how the test was conducted the first time).
  • Mark the water level with a piece of tape or grease pencil and check 24 hours later.  You should have lost no more than what is considered to be acceptable during the summer in your area (it could be anywhere from ¼ inch to 1 inch per day)

Should you suspect a leak in a specific area, you can make the pool restoration company’s job a lot easier by simply placing one or two drops of a dye test solution or some pH indicator from your pool chemical test kit in the water near the suspected leak. If the dye is sucked into the crack you know there is a tear or a gap present.

How to Clean Your Pool After a Mississippi Rainstorm

Rain and thunderstorms are due to happen during the summer months when cooler fronts collides with the heat here in the south. Learning how to clean a pool properly after one hits, however, is essential in maintaining proper pool water chemistry and keeping your pool waters happy and healthy after the event.

To minimize any potential issues such as cloudy water, algae or filter pressure overload, here’s what you can do to keep your pool water chemistry balanced:

Skim and Brush Your Pool

A major problem that comes with these sudden storms is larger debris clogging up your filtration system. By skimming and brushing your pool, you’re removing this damaging debris while also stirring up all of the excess dirt that’s entered your pool, which makes it easier for you system to filter out on its own.

Clean Your Baskets

This includes any skimmer baskets as well as all filter baskets in your pool system.  his will keep a steady flow of water moving through your system and keeping your pool water clean.

Consider shocking Your Pool

If after checking your pool water chemistry you notice it’s a bit off, then it may be worth considering shocking your waters. This will help sanitize any contaminants that may have entered the pool due to the rainstorm.

TIP:  After shocking your pool, check your filter’s PSI. If it’s anywhere from 8 to 10 PSI higher than it normally is, take a few minutes and clean out the filter.

Keep Your System Running

Our final tip for how to clean a pool after a rainstorm is to keep your pump and filter running.  Your circulation systems should be operating for a minimum of 12 hours after a rainstorm to ensure that all of the dirty and debris has been filtered out of your pool, as well as ensure that the chlorine has been sufficiently circulated to maintain pool water chemistry.

Pool Maintenance in Mississippi: Saltwater Pools vs Chlorinated Pools

bond beam, AquaPoolCoWhen it comes to pool water, there’s one question that every new pool owner – and sometimes novice owners – ask: should we invest in a salt water pool?  Or should we choose chlorine to keep our pool water clean?  We’re going to lay out the advantages of both so that you can choose what’s best for you and your pool:

Why Pool Owners Choose Salt Water Pools

One common misconception about this type of poo is that swimmers will emerge feeling exactly as if they’ve exited the ocean.  The water, despite being a salt water pool, isn’t actually salty as you may expect it to be. That said, there are a number of advantages that come with having a salt water pool, though the three most attractive to pool owners are:

  1. Less maintenance than a chlorine pool
  2. Lower overall cost
  3. Less harmful chemicals

In today’s world, there’s a large draw for people to choose a more “natural” approach to almost everything in life, which is partially why salt water pools are increasing in popularity.  It’s safer on our skin and hair than chlorine, but do be warned: it will initially be more harsh on you wallet as these systems can cost $1000 to $5000 more to set up than a chlorine pool.

Why Pool Owners Choose Chlorine Water Pools

Despite the rise in popularity of the salt water pool, chlorine pools are still the most popular.  Not only are these systems better at clearing up bacteria than saltwater systems, but they also work more quickly (compare 24 to 48 hours versus 5 days).  They’re also extremely easy to operate (i.e. a pool owner only needs to add a tablet to the system) and every pool maintenance company knows how to clean and troubleshoot a chlorine pool water system.

The system you choose really depends on your lifestyle and what you expect to get out of your pool.  When in doubt, consult a pool builder or maintenance occupancy for further guidance so that you can choose the best pool water system for you.

Gorgeous Garden Paths to Update Your Backyard

Mississippi Backyard Living Ideas | Aqua Pool Co PlusGarden paths are one of the most popular landscape ideas because they add functionality and beauty to any and all backyard design ideas.  Best of all, they don’t have to be expensive and labor-intensive.  You can save both time and money by creating any one of the following garden paths to your backyard, starting with:

For Natural Settings:  Mulch Paths

Economical and natural, this soft type of path blends right in with the backdrop that mother nature has already given us.  As mulch is lighter than stone, it’s easier to haul and spread this type of material around your garden, and it’s also less expensive than gravel or stone.

There are two considerations that homeowners must make before including mulch paths in with their landscaping ideas, however:

1)    Mulch will degrade overtime and need to be replaced

2)    Since mulch is absorbent, it shouldn’t be used in areas that are frequently wet or have poor drainage

For Formal Gardens:  Gravel

Washed gravel, crushed shells or crushed stone are a staple choice for anyone looking for a more formal and long-lasting garden path.  The only thing that a homeowner may need to do is weed the area to keep their garden path looking its best.

TIP: If you plan on running a lawn mower or wheelbarrow along the path, opt for crushed stone above smooth pebbles.

For Fast and Decorative Paths: Stepping Stones

Stepping stones are amongst the most popular when it comes to backyard design ideas because they’re fast and easy given that there’s little digging involved and they can be created on a tight budget.  You can either choose actual stone, or you can make more modern stepping stone paths using 1-foot round of square concrete patio blocks.

TIP:  Include hardy perennial plants in with your landscape ideas when choosing stepping stones.  Planting these plants between your stones will create a more attractive and long lasting pathway that will continue to look lush year after year.  Consider planting Brass

How to Enjoy a Hot Tub During the Summer Months in Mississippi

Hot TubHow to Enjoy a Hot Tub During the Summer Months

We get it – it’s well over 90F outside and you’re dreaming of cool pools rather than thinking about heating up in a steamy tub.  But rather than allow your hot tub to go unused and wasted until the fall, you can turn that hot tub into a functional and enjoyable spot in no time.

Turning Hot Tubs Into Cool Pools

Who says you have to maintain a hot temperature in your hot tub or spa?  Hot tub owners can easily cool off their hot tubs by:

  • Reducing their hot tub’s temperature to 85F or less
  • Run the air jets and leave the hot tub spa cover open at night.
  • Grab some bags of ice from the convenience store and dump them in the hot tub!

Keep Your Hot Tub Spa Cover On

The great thing about turning hot tubs into cool pools is that the hot tub is insulated.  Once you’ve achieved a desirable temperature for your so-called “hot” tub, make sure that you keep your hot tub spa cover on during the day or when the tub’s not in use so you can take advantage of your spa’s insulation capabilities.

Take Advantage of Your Tub’s Summertime Mode

Many of the newer hot tubs and spas now include a summertime mode that will reduce the temperature of you spa simply by reducing you spa’s filtration time (having constant circulation in your spa increases the water temperature).

One thing that you certainly don’t want to do is completely drain your hot tub or turn off the filter.  By keeping water in the spa, you’ll be keeping the tub moist and prevent any cracking or foundation problems.  Keeping  the filter running will keep the water clear and help maintain your pumps.

How Often Should You Check Your Pool’s Water Chemistry During Summer?

How Often Should You Check Your Pool's Water Chemistry During Summer? | Aqua Pool Co Gulfport MS

Summer is finally here, and the backyards of pool owners are filled with the laughing, splashing and sounds of sheer delight that their pool brings. Undoubtedly your pool is getting a lot more action these days than during those cooler months, so if you’re wondering how to maintain a pool in the summer, we have your answers. The first step for how to maintain a pool:

Check The Pool Water Chemistry Often

During the winter months when your pool is getting a lot less traction, you can get away with checking the pool water chemistry once a week. But during the summer months, checking the pool at least two to three times a week is a good idea. Even if the pool hasn’t gotten much use, the stronger UV rays from the sun can speed up the growth of nasty bacteria and algae.

  • pH Levels: Make sure that the pH of the pool remains anywhere between 7.2 and 7.8, with anywhere around 7.4 being the most ideal.
  • Total Alkalinity: Maintain pool water alkalinity between 80-140 ppm
  • Total Dissolved Solids (TDS): This as well as calcium should be checked every 6 months

How to Clean a Pool During the Summer

Just as you’ll be checking that pool water chemistry more often, it’s a good idea to perform daily checks of the pool to keep it clean. If the pool water chemistry is balanced, then you’ll only need to do quick cleaning duties every few days, such as:

  • Checking and cleaning the skimmer baskets as necessary
  • Cleaning out your pump’s hair or lint pump
  • Check you water levels at least once a month, but check it more frequently if you have some major splashers playing in the pool or are having a particularly hot month (this can increase water evaporation)

As a final tip, remember that with increased usage that the filter will also likely need to be run more frequently. Generally speaking, 6 hours is the minimum, but for greater accuracy, you can calculate how long it takes for your pool to filter all of the water of the pool 2-3 times a day.

Easy Ways to Keep Your Pool Cool in the Summer Heat in Mississippi

Easy Ways to Keep Your Pool Cool in the Summer Heat in Mississippi | Aqua Pool Co Gulfport MS

Is there anything more relaxing and luxurious than lounging in cool pools on a hot summer’s day? Unfortunately, given how the temperature can skyrocket to extreme heat in this area, these cool pools that we dream of enjoying can feel more like a tepid or warm bath. We have some quick water solutions that will keep your pool water refreshing and cool on even the hottest of days, starting with:

Keep Your Pool Cool by Running Your Pump in the Evening

The primary cause behind warm pool water is lack of circulation. When the pool water’s been sitting there all day untouched and unmoved, it’s spent a fair amount of time absorbing and retaining the heat of the summer sun. By running your pump more frequently, you’ll be able to chill those pool waters by a few degrees.

BONUS: If you’re on the market for a new pool pump, consider installing a reverse-cycle heat pump. These pumps allow you to cool and heat your pool on demand.

Install a Fountains and Water Features

Not only do water features like fountains bring a sense of beautiful and tranquility to the pool, but they can even accelerate and maintain the temperature of cool pools! Much like the pump, be sure to run the fountains and other water features at night so that the cool evening air will circulate with the pool water, thus helping you drastically reduce your pool’s temperature overnight.

Invest in a Solar Heating System

Contrary to what some may think, cool pools can be kept even cooler with a solar heating system.  How? As your pool water swooshes through the solar panels, the heat in the water radiates upwards towards the cooler night air and will help reduce you pool temperature.

Get Fit Fast with These 3 Effective Pool Workouts

Get Fit Fast with These 3 Effective Pool Workouts | Aqua Pool Co Gulfport MSIf phoning hours in at the gym isn’t your idea of having fun while getting fit, jump into the pool! Water is quite possibly the best fitness tool for athletes of any level as it provides resistance (which strengthens muscles and increases your cardio intensity) and it sports your weight so you’ll be able to work out hard without putting so much stress on your joints. These 3 pool workouts are excellent for everyone of any fitness level and swimming ability, starting with:

Swimming

Swimming is the ultimate fat burner since it forces every single muscle in you body – including you heart – to work incredibly hard. Whether it’s the breast stroke, side stroke, or the front crawl that you’re using to glide across the pool, all of the above when done for even as little as 15 minutes a day will help you burn anywhere from 200 to 500 calories.

TIP:  Forget the strokes you learned as a kid? Consider taking a summer swimming class with other adults to refresh your memory.

Pool Planks

Not keen on swimming? Then try the next best thing: pool planks. On land, planks can be incredibly hard on your upper body. But once you enter the water, that all changes. Now you’re able to focus solely on strengthening your abdominal muscles while putting minimal stress on your arms, shoulder, and upper back. Simply stand on the pool floor, hold a pool noodle in both of your hands, and press it down. Lean forward until your body is on an incline and hold for as long as you can (start off with a goal of 20 seconds and work your way up from there).

Zig Zag Jogs

If you’re looking to really boost you cardio without swimming, try this on for size: run in a zig zag pattern from one end of your pool to the other. Turn around, and then run straight through all of the different currents you’ve made until you reach the other end.  Try doing this for 3 minutes, and then switch it up with an exercise that’s less cardio intensive, such as a pool plank.
