Hot Tub Time Machine: The Evolution of Personal Spas – Aqua Pool Co

From Nordic Hot Tubs

Learn more about Aqua Pool Co’s selection of Nordic Hot Tubs

Hot tubs bring the comfort and restorative powers of heated, pulsating water jets to homeowners. Today’s hot tubs are and swim spas utilize adnaced technology to improve the quality of your life at home.

In centuries past people travelled from hundreds of miles to visit hot spring pools where they could soak in the mineral-rich heated waters. Some were near geothermally active regions were sulphurous water was heated to more than 100 degrees. Hot water mineral spas have generated a lot of lore over the centuries, but practical experience has shown just how great hot water spas can be for human health. The benefits of hot springs were well known to natives for centuries and this is how many new immigrants learned of these miracle pools. The benefits of some of the minerals such as sulphur were offset by the putrid smell.

While people were willing to travel hundreds of miles to luxuriate in the hot springs in Banff, Alberta, Yellowstone Park, or Hot Springs Arkansas, we don’t have to travel today. Hot Tub manufacturers are creating incredible products that offer all the curative and therapeutic help that you’d receive in a visit to the hot springs.

The home spa is something that is on everyone’s minds these days. Although big screen televisions and travel are tops on the want list today, it is the hot tub spa that is close behind in popularity. It will overtake big screen tvs soon as the most sought after home improvement feature.

Given the aging of America and Europe’s population, there is an emerging medical need for hot tub spas. The heated, pulsating water used in the hot tubs help to improve blood circulation, relax tight muscles, and ease up pressure on overstressed joints. The end benefit for the population as a whole is a feeling of better health and perhaps a reduction in medicare expenses. We can achieve a better quality life by watching less TV, getting more exercise and relaxing in a therapeutic hot tub.

Hot tubs have come a long way from the early days of whirlpool tubs. Today’s tubs have controllable pulsating jets, self-cleaning technology, and high quality insulated shells to allow owners to keep their hot tubs outside. The cost may be a few pennies a day to keep them heated.

Multi-seat Large Hot Tubs

You can buy hot tubs in varying sizes from 2 person to 10 person seating capacity. Each seat offers a different therapeutic effect and there are deep seating spots that ensure a full body exposure to the pulsating water jets. From shoulders to calves to feet, it’s like a having a personal masseuse to push out that lactic acid after a workout. There’s nothing better for the weekend warrior.

Top professional sports clubs consider hot tubs and swim spas a vital therapy and recuperative aid for their athletes. Physiotherapists and trainers all attest to the therapeutic value of hot tubs. Swim spas are a relatively recent hydropool technology that allow a person to swim in one spot. Water is moved along the length of the pool which may be from 10 to 17 feet in length. The individual can safely swim and exercise (aquasize) in the safety of this small pool. Competitive swimmers can gain a significant training advantage if they can practice in their home or yard anytime they feel like it.

Self Cleaning Technology

Newer technology provides exceptional water cleaning capabilities. They can clean and purify the water every 15 minutes, taking away germs and bacteria and other unhealthy pollutants out of the water ensuring users have a great hot tub experience. No more hot tub bacteria to remember your hot tub visit by. They also keep dirt and other particles that might harm the pumps out of circulation too. That means these hot tubs last longer with less likelihood of burning out.

You can set the heat level for your spa and choose how the jets will shoot and pulsate. The level of control over the water is amazing. The advanced heat valve technology controls heat build up in the operational unit which is out of site. In winter the heat is retained, but in summer when it’s hot out, the excess heat is released. The insulation technology in new hot tubs is amazing. The thermal blanket technology is applied to the base of the hot tub. There are two air chambers that provide a double seal which controls heat loss and moisture buildup.

Hot tubs are built in a one piece modular design with fixture added in during assembly. It doesn’t take a plumber or installation specialist to install them either. Any handyman can install the hut tubs with a basic knowledge of piping. If you’re not into such installation, retailers will have installation technicians to install them. Given they will probably be delivering them to your home, you may as well have them complete the installation.

The hot tub retailers will have extra accessories such as steps, covers, extra jets and hand railings which you might find helpful for your guests.

Now is definitely time to consider buying a hot tub for your home. Manufacturers are offering discounts on models. You’ll definitely feel more relaxed and your friends will enjoy visiting.

Planning a Pool, How to Choose a Pool Builder – Aqua Pool Co

Planning a pool is a big decision. As summer nears, now is the time to build a pool. Below are some tips from Better Homes and Gardens on how to choose a pool builder.

Choosing a Contractor

  • Get referrals from friends and neighbors.
  • Talk to at least three builders.
  • Determine number of years in business under present name and ownership.
  • Ensure contractor is bonded and insured. Get proof.
  • Visit their work firsthand and talk with the homeowners about their experience with this contractor.
  • Talk with suppliers about the contractor’s status.
  • Do they subcontract work or use their own staff?
  • Do they have design experience? Do they offer design services?
  • It is not customary to pay the full amount up front.
  • Get lien waivers for all work completed.

Construction Times

  • Anticipate a little dirt in your life during construction of an in-ground pool. Your contractor can estimate a project completion date but remember Mother Nature doesn’t always cooperate.
  • An in-ground pool takes anywhere from three to twelve weeks depending on the complexity of the project.

Above ground pools can be installed in a matter of hours or a few days. Aqua Pool Co offers the best selection of above ground pools on the gulf coast. Stop by our store at 11296 Lorraine Rd., Gulfport, MS 39503 to visit our showroom and to customize an above ground pool today.

The Right Kind of Pool Cleaner for You – Aqua Pool Co

pool cleaner

There are a variety of pool cleaners on the market, so it’s important to find the one that will work best for you. Understanding what options are out there is the first step.

Automatic Pressure-Side Cleaners function from water pressure coming from a pump, whether it is your main circulation pump or a dedicated booster pump. The pressure forces the pump to move around the pool and pick up debris into the attached bag. There are a few pros and cons to the pressure-side cleaner — because of an attached bag, the cleaner doesn’t suck debris into your filter or pump basket, however, because of the attached bag, it cannot filter small particles. So while this cleaner would be ideal if your pool is surrounded by trees, it may not be the best if you  want to pick up smaller debris.

Automatic Suction-Side Cleaners rely on suction to move around the pool and vacuum debris off the pool floor. These kinds of cleaners also have the ability to scrub the walls, reducing the amount of time you would spend during the week brushing the pool. Because this cleaner suctions debris into the filter, it can cause the filter to get dirty rather quickly, so it’s imperative that it is cleaned often to get rid of everything that the cleaners sucks up when it vacuums.

Robotic Cleaners rely on the electronic motors inside the unit to power the cleaner so it can vacuum debris into its own filter through a separate pump. This type of cleaner is best used for pools that don’t attract large debris, like leaves. And it is the only type of cleaner that scrubs walls, as well as tile lines.

Planning a Pool, Cost of Ownership – Aqua Pool Co

cost-pool-ownership-aqua-pool-co

There are many factors to take into consideration when planning for a pool. To continue the series from Better Homes and Gardens, let’s look at what you need to prepare for when considering a backyard pool.

Chemicals
The cost for pool chemicals averages between $50 and $100 per month depending on your climate, pool size and frequency of use. Above-ground pools of a similar size will cost the same as in-ground counterparts.

Opening and Closing A Pool
Hiring a professional to open and close your pool each season will run approximately $150-$300. Cleaning and storing your pool cover is usually additional.

Maintenance
The largest maintenance expense is a pool’s interior finish. Vinyl liners last approximately 5-7 years, painted concrete needs a new coat approximately every five years; a plaster finish may last 10-15 years. Many of the new cement-coated products such as Pebble Tec are meant to last a lifetime.

Pool Equipment
Equipment lifespans vary tremendously by brand and quality. Other elements such as proper water chemistry and location of equipment can affect lifespan. Because pumps are made to push water rather than draw water, pumps placed at pool level often last longer than those that sit higher and have to pump harder.

Utilities
While utility bills do increase during a pool’s open season, experts disagree on how to manage the increase.

The cost of pool ownership is important as you decide what route you’d like to go. We welcome you to visit Aqua Pool Co and speak with our helpful staff. We are here to help you, and would love to assist you in your decision. You can trust the knowledge and friendly staff at Aqua Pool Co.

Planning a Pool: Above Ground Pool Vs. In-Ground Pool – Aqua Pool Co

above-ground-pool-vs-in-ground-pool
March is the perfect month to get your backyard ready for our Mississippi summers. The decisions you make can deeply influence your lifestyle and your pocketbook. We came accross and article from Better Homes and Gardens that brings up some great points when considering an above ground pool vs. and in-ground pool.

Above Ground Pool vs. In-Ground Pool
Better Homes and Gardens

Constructing or installing a pool may seem overwhelming with so many options and decisions. Here are the issues to consider to help you make the best choice for you and your family.

A pool is a major investment, in many ways. You’ll need to invest cash, of course, but also time, energy, and yard space. In this portion of the Pool and Spa Guide, we’ll look at the key questions that you’ll need to answer before you make these investments

Things to Consider:

  • How much pool can I afford?
  • Is my yard suited to a pool?
  • What zoning restrictions do I face?
  • Who should install my pool and how long will it take?
  • What should I know about safety and insurance?

above-ground-poolAbove-Ground Pools

Because these pools are installed rather than built they are more economical than in-ground pools to purchase.

The most basic above-ground pools, requiring no filtration equipment — also called splasher pools — will run as little as a few hundred dollars to $1000 for more substantial models.

Larger, more elaborate above-ground pools with filtration equipment will cost between $1,000-$8,000, excluding extras like decking, landscaping and accessories.

in-ground-poolIn-Ground Pools

Design and construction costs make in-ground pools more expensive to build.

In-ground pools with minimal patio surrounding and basic fencing start around $20,000.
More elaborate designs will run between $40,000 to $100,000+. Choice of pool design and building materials, patio materials, landscaping, lighting and extra features such as spas or fountains determine the cost.

At Aqua Pool Co, we can help you in your decision between above ground pool vs. in-ground pool. While we do sell quality above ground pools, we also help our customers maintain the in-ground pools. It’s a personal decision based on your budget and backyard. Our friendly staff is here to help. Stop by your Gulfport pool and spa supply store today!

Benefits of a Hot Tub from Your Gulfport Pool Store – Aqua Pool Co

nordic hot tubs aqua pool co gulfport

At Aqua Pool Co, we offer top of the line hot tubs for our customers, include Nordic Hot Tubs. This line of tub is what we consider our “Premium” tub. These tubs have the most power, most jets, LED lighting, water falls, water fountains, and other features.

Nordic Hot Tubs has some great research on why hot tubs are beneficial to your health. Check out this post if your consider why you should buy a hot tub:

Benefits of a Hot Tub

There are many benefits to sitting in an hot tub.  You don’t need a research study to understand the health benefits to a good soak in a spa.

Headaches, Stress, and Sleep

A hot tub can stimulate the release of our stress reducing endorphins. A hot tub’s hydrotherapy jets also dilate blood vessels to help prevent headaches. And when it comes to falling asleep faster and getting a deep night’s sleep, the National Sleep Foundation clearly states, “soaking in hot water, such as a hot tub or bath, before retiring to bed can ease the transition into a deeper sleep.”

Muscles and joints

Ask any athlete in training –  Hydrotherapy is a staple in the training room.  One magazine article in Tennis Magazine said it best: “Your skin and muscles loosen and relax from the increased blood circulation” adding that, if muscles are injured: “Soaking in a hot tub with a whirlpool increases blood flow to the injured area, bringing nutrients to help repair the damage.”

Arthritis

According to the Arthritis Foundation “Hydrotherapy is one method of using water to help treat arthritis. The soothing warmth and buoyancy of the water makes it a safe, ideal environment for relieving arthritis pain. Using a spa adds another component to the therapy – massage.”

Blood Sugar

One study taken in Colorado has shown that people suffering from type 2 diabetes have significantly brought their blood sugar down by regularly soaking in a hot tub for 15 to 30 minutes each day. Doctors who conducted the study speculated benefits of hot tub therapy could be due to increased blood flow to skeletal muscles.

Pool Water Care Terminology from Aqua Pool Co

Aqua Pool Co Water Care Tips

Owning a backyard pool can be one of the best purchases you’ve ever made. It brings your family together and creates a hot vacation spot in your own backyard. While swimming pools and spas are great for your lifestyle, they do require water care maintenance. With the right knowledge, taking care of your pool can be a breeze.

Stop by and see us at Aqua Pool Co any time you need pool chemical balance and sanitation help. In the meantime, brush up on these important terms from Better Homes and Gardens to make maintaining your pool a lot easier.

Sanitizers

Chlorine and bromine are the most common chemicals used to sanitize — or keep your pool free from microscopic particles. Other sanitizers such as chlorine generators and oxidizers are also available.

Balance

Balanced water means the pool water’s pH level, total alkalinity, water hardness and total dissolved solids fall within certain ranges. Imbalanced water causes eye irritation, cloudy water, and can spell trouble for your pool’s operation equipment and your interior finish. Sodium bicarbonate (soda ash) and muratic acid are the two most common products used to balance pool water.

Testing

Pool water needs to be tested regularly. The frequency depends on your region, weather conditions, and how much the pool gets used, although a good rule of thumb is four to five times per week.

Testing Kits

Don’t worry if chemistry was not your best subject in high school. Simple to use and read, test kits make it easy to test your pool water.

Shocking

It is occasionally necessary to add high doses of sanitizers. Heavy rains, unusually high temperatures and heavy usage create the need for shocking.

Swimming Pool Terminology Help From Aqua Pool Co

aqua-pool-co-swimming-pool-tips

As the summer season approaches, many of you may be looking to get a backyard swimming pool. As you meet with a pool builder or if you come in our store to talk about above ground pool options, you may become overwhelmed with all the swimming pool terminology. We at Aqua Pool Co. want to be a resource for our customers so you are comfortable when building, purchasing or maintaining your pool or spa.  We found a great article from Better Homes and Gardens that discusses the basic pool and spa terms you may hear and wanted to pass along the information!

Pump and Motor
The motor drives the pump which circulates the water from the pool through the filtration system — including skimmer baskets, filter, heater and automatic chlorinator — and returns the water to the pool.

Skimmer Baskets
As water is drawn to the filtration system it first passes through skimmer baskets, located at the perimeter of the pool, to catch large debris such as leaves and twigs.

Filter
The filter cleans the pool of fine particles. There are three basic types of filters available on the market.

Diatomaceous Earth Filters (DE)
DE filters are fine mesh that has been coated with diatomaceous earth. Although these filters are organic, some areas restrict disposal of DE, which is done each time the filter is cleaned or backwashed.

Sand Filters
This filter forces the pool water to pass through a fine sand which filters particles from the water. The sand needs to be replaced every few years.

Cartridge Filters
These pass the pool water through a series of grid-like devices made of a pleated mesh material.

Heaters
They heat the pool water. Although common in cooler climates to extend the pool season, they are also popular in warmer climates for the comfort.

Ladders and Safety Equipment
Ladders provide an exit from the pool and are typically located at the opposite end from the pool steps.

Pool Float
A pool float is a line which crosses the pool at the point where the depth changes.
