Summer Splashback: Top Pool Games from the 90’s

best pool games of the 90'sAhh, summer in the 90’s. The Spin Doctors were on the radio, Luke Perry was everyone’s favorite bad boy, and Z Cavaricci’s were just the absolute coolest. But when it came time to hit the pool, kids could just be kids again. If you were a kid in the 90’s, you probably remember these pool games. Leave us a comment telling us which was your favorite!

Categories

To play Categories, everyone had to choose a leader first. The leader was sent to one end of the pool and the players gathered in the water on the opposite side. The leader would choose a category, like “colors” or “actors” and shout the category down to the players. The leader then covered his/her ears while the players discussed their choices. Each player chose their own answer to the category and shared it with the others. When everyone was ready they would signal to the leader to begin. The leader would then call out answers to the category. When he/she called out an answer that someone has chosen, that player and the leader would race to the opposite side. Whoever won got to be the leader for the next round. This could go on all day, and often did!

Sharks and Minnows

The person designated as the shark would stand in the middle of the pool with his eyes closed. The other players would gather at the opposite wall. Every minnow had to touch the wall. The shark would close his eyes and call out a category. The minnows would decide on their choices quietly. Sometimes more than one minnow would make the same choice. For example, if the category was colors, maybe three minnows would choose pink. This was ok. The shark would call out different choices. If a minnow’s choice was called they would have to swim as quietly as possible to the other side. If the shark heard them, he could open his eyes and try to catch them. If a minnow was caught, they would have to be the shark. The game would continue this way until the next adult swim was called or until mom brought out the lunch.

Marco Polo

While certainly not limited to the 90’s, Marco Polo was always an old reliable. Kids of all ages and swim abilities could play it and you didn’t need any props. The person that was “it” stood in the middle of the pool with her eyes closed. She would call out “Marco!” and the other swimmers (who would be circling around her in the water) would call out “Polo!” in response. She would try to tag one of the other swimmers without opening her eyes. The first person tagged would be it and the game would start again. Sometimes, to change things up a bit, the tagged swimmers would join the “it” person instead of replacing them, calling out “Marco” with their eyes closed trying to tag more people together. This made the game more exciting because there were more “Marco’s” that you had to escape.

When everyone had their fill of pool games, it was time to towel off and run home in time to catch the latest episode of Full House. Yikes. So maybe not everything about growing up in the 90’s was great, but those days in the pool were unforgettable. Why not relive those Wonder Years (remember that one?) by teaching your favorite pool games to your kids this weekend?

Cardio Work-Out in Your Pool

Instead of driving over to the gym, why not use your beautiful home pool to escape the summer heat and experience an effective workout? You already have everything you need to work-out right in your backyard.

Always consult your doctor before beginning an exercise routine to make sure you are healthy enough to use it and if it will benefit you the best. Also, never workout in your pool alone and observe other pool safety rules.

First, Warm up:
Spend 5-10 minutes stretching your major muscle groups out of the water and use this time to slowly and steadily elevate your heart rate.

Strength and Endurance Training:
• Begin by simply walking back and forth in the water, submerging yourself to your shoulders. After two trips across and back, increase your pace and the reach of your arms.

Use your arms to pull yourself through the water. Repeat 5 times.
•Next, swim complete laps (across and back) using whichever stroke you want. Feel free to mix up strokes as well.
•Repeat the walking and laps up to 6 times. Don’t overexert yourself, but try to keep you heart rate up for 10-20 minutes.

Cool Down:
•Use the pool to stretch out your muscles, which are most likely sore at this point, and then repeat stretching once you are out of the pool.

A moderately paced pool exercise for 30 minutes can burn up to 300 calories. Afterwards, rest and drink an entire 12 ounce bottle of water. Once you have caught your breath and finished you water, fill up on fruit and veggies. Try to keep the carbs and dips to a minimum to avoid post-workout overeating.

Better Homes and Gardens – Spa Care Maintenance

http://www.bhg.com/home-improvement/outdoor/pools-spas/spa-care-and-maintenance/

Using the appropriate equipment and fairly minimal effort will keep your bubbling haven clean and comfortable. Here are the facts about the equipment and chemicals you’ll need for upkeep, and the regular chores you’ll need to perform.

Pump and Motor

The pump circulates the spa water through the filter and heater and then returns it to the spa.

Filter or Sanitizer

The filter’s primary purpose is to clean the spa of particles. There are three basic types of filters available on the market and a few alternatives.

Diatomaceous Earth Filters (DE)

DE filters are fine mesh that has been coated with diatomaceous earth. Although these filters are organic, some areas restrict disposal of DE, which is done each time the filter is cleaned or backwashed, which occurs frequently.

Sand filters

These filters force the spa water to pass through a fine sand which filters particles from the water. The sand needs to be replaced every few years.

Cartridge filters

These pass the spa water through a series of grid-like devices made of a pleated mesh material.

Ultraviolet Water Sterilizers

Sanitize spa water with ultraviolet rays.

Ionizer

This type of spa sanitizer kills bacteria by introducing an electric current between two metal electrodes located in the water pipe system.

Ozone Generator

Sanitize by introducing ozone into the spa water.

Heaters

Ideal spa water temperature is between 100-103 degrees. It is important to purchase a heater with a BTU rating adequate to service your spa’s size.

Spa Pack

This special pack refers to portable spas, which come complete with everything needed to operate the system, including the pump, filter, motor, and heater.

Hydro Jets

Agitate the spa water by pushing a mixture of air and water to create water pressure and provide a massaging action. Table spas typically come with a set number of jets, which varies according to the size of the spa. If you design a built-in spa, you can include as many jets as you wish.

Air Blowers

These blowers use air pressure to agitate spa water, creating swirling bubbles on the surface.

Spa water must be sanitized and balanced at all times to provide a safe water environment. The heated water provides perfect growing conditions for unwanted bacteria.

Sanitizers

Chlorine and bromine are the most common chemicals used to sanitize, or keep your spa free from microscopic particles. Other sanitizers such as chlorine generators and oxidizers are also available. Oxidizers are sometimes teamed with bromine to sanitize a spa.

Balance

Imbalanced water causes eye irritation, cloudy water, and can spell trouble for your pool’s operation equipment. Maintaining specific levels of pH, alkalinity, water hardness, and total dissolved solids will keep spa water balanced. Sodium bicarbonate (soda ash) and muratic acid are the two most common products used to balance spa water.

Testing

Spa water needs to be tested regularly. The frequency depends on your region, weather conditions, and how much the spa gets used. Three to four times a week is a good rule of thumb when it is used regularly.

Test Kits

Chemistry was not your best subject in high school? Don’t worry. Simple-to-use-and-read test kits make it a breeze to test your spa water.

Because spas are covered when not in use, debris in the spa is minimal.

Skimming

The surface can be skimmed if needed and most large debris such as leaves or twigs will be captured in the skimmer basket. The basket should be emptied regularly.

Water Change

Though regular use of chemicals in the spa allows you to keep the water sanitized, it is recommended to completely drain your spa and start fresh about every six months.

Storing Your Extras – Aqua Pool Co

Outside storage doesn’t have to be industrial looking, nor does it need to be the usual plastic buckets and bins that you’re accustomed to. It’s time to get creative in storing your outside wares.

Hidden storage is always a good idea. Look into pieces that have a hidden compartment for you to keep things. These options are fantastic ways to keep the backyard uncluttered while looking chic and staying functional!

A lot of storage bins on the market today are far different than the mass marketed plastic ones. Find cute bins made of wicker, cedar or teak and strategically place them around the yard. Get creative in your placement and incorporate the pieces into your backyard as part of the decor.

If you’re feeling really ambitious, design and build yourself a fabulous storage area in the backyard that blends well with the poolscape. Not only will it be functional, but it’ll be made and designed just the way you want with the materials you want. Nothing says a fun project like a do-it-yourself!

Spa Maintenance Tips – Aqua Pool Co

Photo Credit pool spa 1 image by Aaron Kohr from Fotolia.com

We are getting nice enough weather to now be able to enjoy our hot tubs and spas! Check out these tips from Live Strong on spa maintenance.

Whether you think of your home spa as a relaxing oasis, a therapeutic retreat or the neighborhood party tub, proper maintenance will keep the spa running smoothly. Proper maintenance also insures that your spa remains a healthy place to relax. An improperly maintained spa suffers from poor water quality and can harbor harmful bacteria.

Disinfect

The warm water that makes a spa so pleasant to soak in also provides the perfect environment for the growth of bacteria. Use a disinfectant to kill bacteria. Disinfectants also help to break down organic matter such as dirt and oil from the skin, and keep the water cleaner. The two most commonly used disinfectants used in spas are chlorine and bromine. Use granules or tablets to dispense the disinfectant over time in the spa.

Sponsored Links

Shock

Even with regular disinfectant use, levels of chemicals known as chloramines or bromamines, by-products of the disinfectants, can build up in the spa water. These by-products make the disinfectants less effective. Applying a higher than usual level of chlorine to the water once a week dissipates these by-products. The public health department of Seattle and King County, Washington, recommends “shocking” your spa once a week.

Test

Test your spa at least once a week to verify that you are maintaining the correct amount of disinfectant. You should also test the pH of your water. A pH that’s too high or low limits the effectiveness of your disinfectant, and a pH that’s too low can lead to corrosion of your spa’s metal parts. If your pH is too high, the water will be cloudy and may irritate your skin and eyes. The Centers for Disease Control recommends maintaining a pH of 7.2 and 7.6. You should also test the water’s alkalinity and dissolved solids. Pool and Spa.com recommends maintaining alkalinity between 100 and 120.

Change Filters

Your spa uses one or more filters to filter out hair, dirt and particles of debris. This not only keeps the water in the spa cleaner, it protects the spa’s pumps from damage from this material. Clean your spa’s filters regularly and replace them when they become worn or dirty. Doing so will keep your spa water cleaner and will extend the life of your spa.

Change the Water

Even with regular use of disinfectants and changing filters, the water in your spa will eventually become cloudy and dirty. You’ll need to drain the tub, clean it and refill with fresh water. Pool and Spa.com recommends changing the water in your spa every eight to 12 weeks, depending on how often you use it.

Cleaning

Oils and dirt can build up on the surface of the spa. Clean these surfaces with a mild soap and water and a soft cloth. Don’t use any kind of abrasive cleaner. For stubborn stains, try a little baking soda sprinkled on a soft cloth.

Cover

Cover your spa when you’re not using it to help to maintain the heat and to keep out debris. Remove the cover and set it aside before you soak in the spa. Don’t set heavy objects on top of the cover, and don’t let water or ice accumulate on the cover, since the weight could warp or damage the cover. You can use a cleaner designed to protect car dashes or upholstery to clean and protect your spa cover.

Keep the Pool Fun With These Extras – Aqua Pool Co

There was a time when a pool did all the entertaining by itself — there wasn’t a need for something else. But these days kids like to have toys in the pool, floats to splash around on and slides to fly down. So it definitely pays to know what fun toys are out there.

When it comes to toys and floats, the list is really endless. So it’d be difficult to name every pool toy on the market. However, some popular favorites include diving toys, water-friendly sporting games like basketball, volleyball and football, and squirt guns.

Float options are abundant but it’s important to remember a few things. Inflatable rafts and floats are not meant to be safety devices. Children who don’t know how to swim shouldn’t treat them as such, nor should parents. Some people recommend deflating the toys after pool time is over because children associate play time with the toy and may thing it’s still OK to use it, even if the pool is unsupervised.

Adding a slide would also be a permanent way to have some extra fun in the pool. They are made from fiberglass or acrylic and come equipped with a hose that connects to the pool’s return line so a constant stream of water can run down it and keep the surface wet for an easier glide down.

Keep Your Pool Energy Efficient – Aqua Pool Co

Whether you are into eco-friendly trends or just trying to save a few dollars, keeping your pool energy efficient is a great way to achieve both. There are a few things you can do as a pool owner to keep your energy consumption down and pocketbook balance up.

An energy-efficient pump is a great way to reduce the amount of electricity you use when operating your pool. A key thing to look for in an energy-efficient pump is one with a timer so you can control how much you operate your pool. A pump that features variable speeds is also a great way to control how much energy your pump uses.

Adding a pool cover is also a great way to keep the pool energy efficient. It keeps heat in and prevents evaporation, as well as keeps the kids safe. There are a variety of covers on the market, so find one that works best for your type of pool.

Keeping your filter clean also keeps the pool energy efficient because the dirtier your filter is the harder it has to work and the more energy you use. Make sure to follow manufacturer instruction to ensure the filter works at its peak levels.

Lastly, heating the pool plays a pivotal role in your pool’s energy efficiency. If you maintain the pool’s temperature above 78 degrees, you can run up the pool’s operating cost 10 percent for every degree increase, according to the Red Cross. (If you enjoy warm water, then consider a solar cover for less expensive heating costs.)
