How to Prepare Your Mississippi Pool for Winter

Easy winter pool maintenance tips from Aqua Pool Co!

Preparing your pool for the winter is a little more involved than simplyMississippi Winter Pool Maintenance | Aqua Pool Co. Plus draining it. Pools represent a significant investment in your home and require the proper maintenance and support if they are to remain in good condition. Luckily, most of the preparations you need to make before winter hits are fairly simple.

Prepare Your Pool Early

Many homeowners are surprised by the first cold snap and don’t get a chance to properly drain their pool before the frost begins. Not only can ice damage the interior of your pool, but a frozen pool can be very dangerous for both children and family pets. When the temperature first begins plunging you should already be preparing your family pool. After all, you won’t be swimming in it once it gets frosty.

Don’t Forget the Pipes

Not only does your pool need to be cleaned out, the pipes that lead into the pool do too. You should thoroughly drain and dry all of your pipes before winter. Otherwise, the pipes themselves may retain water that could expand and burst. Replacing pipes is always a costly experience, and one to be avoided.

Invest in a Good Cover

Covers are still important for empty pools, as the pool itself can represent a significant safety concern should someone trip and fall into it. Covers also keep your pool clean and ready for when the season finally changes.

Winterizing your pool is a fantastic time to also inspect it for any potential issues. Monitor your pool equipment to ensure that it’s operating correctly and look over the surface of your pool to see if there are any cracks, chips or other damage. If you do find any issues, you can have your pool fixed in time for the warm summer months.

Swimming Benefits for Diabetics From Aqua Pool Co.

October is National Diabetes Month, and what better way is there to recognize this disease that’s growing in numbers than to participate in the war against it?  One of the best ways to start your battle against diabetes is to take up swimming.

Why Choose Swimming?

There are two primary reasons why swimming is an ideal choice for anyone suffering from diabetes, or hoping to keep it at bay:

  • Water allows the body to become buoyant, which means that one’s body weight is supported so that individuals are able to get a full body exercise without putting a significant strain on their bones and joints.
  • Water provides natural resistance, giving you a greater calorie burn than if you were to perform the same movement on land.

Swimming Benefits for Diabetics From Aqua Pool Co. | Aqua Pool Co Gulfport Mississippi

Burn More Calories

Speaking of calories, you can easily expect to burn as much as 3 to 4 times more calories when performing an exercise in the water than if you were to perform it in the gym since you’re toning your entire body rather than working on just one specific part.  Just swimming alone can burn anywhere up to 350 to 450 calories per hour, which isn’t’ surprising as you’re performing dynamic movement in a resistant environment.

Easier Aerobic Exercise

For many individuals, particularly those who are overweight, this type of aerobic exercise is easier to perform than, say, running on a treadmill or sitting on a bike.  Again, you’re putting less pressure on your already stressed bones and joints, so swimming is easier on the body.  As those who are overweight are better able to perform this aerobic exercise and for a longer period of time, these individuals also reap a number of other benefits, like:

  • The delivery of oxygen to the body’s muscles improves.
  • An individual’s blood pressure reduces.

Helps Moderate Your Blood Sugar

Finally, swimming does have the ability to help you regain control over your blood sugar levels.  Swimming 3 to 4 days a week alone can significantly help individuals moderate their blood sugar.

Mississippi Fall/Winter Pool Maintenance for the Non-Winterized Pool

If you happen to be fortunate enough to live in a warmer climate (like here in Gulfport) and are able to escape the rain and snow storms that plagues to the majority of the continent during the winter months, then you may want to consider keeping your pool open year ’round.  There are a number of advantages to keeping your pool open all year, such as preserving the “health” of your pumps and motors, maintaining the chemistry of your water, and being able to entertain people beside your beautiful pool.

How Often should I Maintain my Pool?

How often you maintain your pool depends on the amount of time you have to take proper care of it and how often you plan to be using the pool.  For most, a weekly or bi-weekly maintenance schedule is more than sufficient, as long as you’re thorough every time.

TIP:  If you don’t have time to maintain your pool as often as necessary, consider hiring on a pool cleaning company for those weeks when you can’t do the job.

Mississippi Fall/Winter Pool Maintenance for the Non-Winterized Pool | Aqua Pool Co Gulfport

What sort of Maintenance should I be Performing?

When maintaining your pool during the “off season”, pool owners should, for the most part, follow the same maintenance that they would throughout the rest of the year:

  • Test the water chemistry: Even if the pool is seldom used, it’s important to ensure that the chemistry of the water is balanced so that the chemicals continue to keep harmful bacteria and algae at bay
  • Clean the water line:  Not only are “rings” around the pool unattractive, but those rings are a breeding ground for unhealthy bacteria
  • Brush and vacuum the pool: If left uncovered, you’ll likely need to still vacuum your pool once a week (if not more, if you have falling leaves in your yard).  You may only need to brush your pool bi-weekly
  • Check the equipment: You need to regularly make sure that all of the pumps and motors are performing as they should.  It’s also important to pull out the filters and give them a good clean every one to two weeks

Once you decide your pool maintenance schedule, make sure that you stick with it.  As the temperature, sunlight, and a number of other environmental factors tend to fluctuate in the fall and winter months, your pool is more prone to having improper chemistry levels.  This could result in damage to the finish of the pool, to the fixtures within it, and make it more difficult to get the water back to acceptable levels when you’re ready to go for a dip.

Mississippi Pool Safety: Equipment You Need to Protect your Family and Friends

As much fun as it can be hanging around the pool on a hot summer day in Mississippi, those cheers and shouts of joy can quickly turn to cries for help whenever water’s involved.  To keep your pool safe and sound for family and friends, here’s what you need:

Safety Fence

If you’re already budgeting for a pool, then make sure that your budget includes a safety fence.  Every pool, regardless of whether you have kids or pets, should be surrounded by a  safety fence  You never know when a visitor with a pet or children may stop by, or worse yet, when a neighboring child or family pet may sneak out of their own yard and into your pool.

Life Rings

It doesn’t matter how well you can or can’t swim.  Every pool should have some sort of safety floatation device always on hand, such as a life ring.  A life ring is the easiest and most effective way to prevent someone from drowning.

Drain Covers

The drains of a pool can suck in the hair, and even the appendages of a person, especially those of young, curious children.  If you want to make sure that your pool stays as safe as it can be, then install main drain covers.

Depth Markers

Many homeowners don’t even think to install depth markers – after all, it’s just them and their private guests enjoying the pool, right?  But depth markers are important to install, regardless of who may be using the pool.  These give yourself and your guests a clear indication of how deep the water is, and a reminder of how dangerous the water can be the further one ventures in.

TIP: It’s a good idea to add a “no diving” marker as a visual reminder to kids and adults that your pool isn’t deep enough for that kind of activity

Pool Alarms

There are a number of pool alarms on the market today, each offering their own set of pros and cons. The gate or yard alarm that alerts you if someone’s entering the pool area is arguably the most effective, though there are some that will also alarm you if someone is actually in or around the pool area.

Gulfport Family Fun: Backyard Camping

Let the whole family enjoy your Mississippi outdoor living environment with this fun idea for an backyard camping!

Who says that you have to visit a crowded campsite to have a great outdoor adventureMississippi Family Fun | Aqua Pool Co Plus when you have your very own backyard to explore?  All you need is a tent, some sleeping bags and an imagination, and you can have one of the best camping experiences right on your very own property.

Campground Fare

While you can always fire up the grill to cook some hotdogs and burgers, you can venture outside of the expected by making some simple s’mores and grilling some nachos.

Simple S’mores: For this delicious dessert that’s sure to please, simply warm up some chocolate sauce and pour it onto a plate shallow bowl.  Next, crush up some graham crackers (kids love to help out with this one!) and place those on another plate.  Roast those marshmallows, and then dip them into the chocolate followed by rolling them in the crushed graham crackers.

Grilled Nachos:  Cut out a sheet of aluminum foil for each camper.  Now take a handful of tortilla chips and place them in the center of their foil.  Put out a selection of standard nacho toppings, such as salsa, grated cheddar cheese, black beans, avocado, olives and beans so each camper can make his or her own customized plate of nachos.  Fold in the corners of the foil to create a foil “pouch” and grill the pouch until the cheese has melted (approximately 10 minutes).

Fun & Games

Camping is all about fun and games!  Try to plan some different activities for before and after the sun goes down.

Poolside Fun:  When the sun’s still high in the sky, little campers will love to play games in the “lake”.  Make up a fishing game, have bathers paddle their way from one end of the pool to the next using only their hands and a pool noodle, or see who can do the silliest dive off of the diving board.

Flashlight Fun:  All you need to make things fun in the dark is a flashlight.  From uncovering treasures to playing tag and hide ‘n seek after dark, flashlights can be used to spot people and prizes hiding all over your backyard.

Mississippi Swimming Pool Maintenance: Pool Chemistry Changes in the Fall

Have you ever wondered how your swimming pool chemistry changes throughout the year in Mississippi? Here’s a quick guide to fall water chemistry and swimming pool maintenance!

When it comes to Mississippi swimming pool maintenance, one question that a lot ofMississippi Swimming Pool Maintenance | Aqua Pool Co Plus pool owners ask is if the temperature of a pool can affect the chemistry of a pool.  While there’s no specific temperature that a pool should be set at, for the most part, the waters should be anywhere between 75°F to 85°F.  When the temperatures begin to drop in the fall, this will have an affect on your pool’s water chemistry.  Pool owners should pay attention to this, not just because it may make the water less comfortable to swim in, but also because the decrease in outdoor temperatures can negatively affect the pool’s chemistry.

Why Cold Water Can Ruin Your Pool

Whenever the temperature of your pool water ventures outside of that comfortable 75°F to 85°F range, the water becomes more corrosive.  This means that your pipes can become permanently damaged, your equipment can be forever destroyed, and your pool itself will likely need costly repairs in the not-too-distant future.

The pH is also likely to increase in the fall thanks to an increase in rain water, snow, and debris.  When the pH levels increase and the chlorine sanitizer levels begin to diminish, the conditions become ideal for the growth of pesky algae.

How to Maintain Water Temperatures in the Fall

When the sun’s blazing summer rays are no longer strong enough to keep your pool water warm, savvy pool owners know that they’ll need to depend on their heaters so that the waters can stay at optimal levels.  Most heaters are:

  • Electric
  • Gas
  • Solar powered

The size and the type of heater that you would select for your pool will depend greatly on both the type of pool in your backyard as well as its size.  You may also want to strongly consider investing in a solar cover for your pool.  These covers, even in the cooler months, can help maintain your pool’s temperatures, which will also save you a bundle in energy costs.

Gulfport Backyard Living Ideas: DIY Outdoor Decorations

Spruce up your Mississippi backyard living environment with these quick and easy DIY decorating ideas!

Backyard decorations don’t have to cost an arm and a leg.  With the right materials and a bit of creativity, you can bring the backyard of your dreams to life with simple decorations, like these below:

Personalized Planters

There are a number of fantastic DIY planter ideas that you can incorporate to match the mood and style of your patio area.  Stacked tires can easily be painted any colour and any design, and then turned into beautiful larger-sized planters.  Old watering cans and woven baskets can be repurposed.  For smaller plants, terra cotta planters can quickly and easily be painted, sprayed, or have left over fabric or materials applied with glue to create one of a kind, eye catching flower pots and planters.

If you’re looking for a smaller little planter, you can make a three-tier succulent planter after spending a few bucks at the dollar store.  All you need are three bowls or plates (of varying sizes) and two glass cups.  Securely glue the glass cups between each level so that you have three plates “stacked” on top of one another.  You can then add rocks, wood, or soil and plant herbs and other lovely succulents.

Crafty Walkways

Walkways are a great addition to any garden, while rocks or large stones are theMississippi Backyard Living Ideas | Aqua Pool Co Plus easiest, you can also take apart an unused pallet or pallets and then use the wooden slats to create a lovely wooden walkway (make sure that you weather treat the wood prior to laying it on any outside surface to help keep it in tip top shape).

Hanging Birdbaths

This is another simple craft that you can whip up with materials found at your local dollar store.  All you need is an imitation nest or grapevine wreath, a bowl or the bottom of a terra cotta pot that will nicely fit in the nest, and some twine.  Place the bowl in the center of the nest or wreath.  Then, simply cut four lengths of twine and tie that twine around each quarter of the wreath.  Bring each of the lengths together at the top.  Now you can easily hang the bird bath and enjoy watching the robins, chickadees and other local birds reveling in this refreshing decorative piece.

Swimming Pool Exercise Tips from Aqua Pool Co.

Next time you’re in your backyard, why not try out some of these yoga moves in your Mississippi swimming pool?

One of the hottest fitness crazes to hit gyms across the nation is swimming pool yoga.  The reason:  you burn more calories and get more resistance while taking the pressure off of your bones, muscles and joints.  The best part is, if you have a pool in your backyard, then you can start enjoying these benefits today.

The Water Cobra

What’s great about performing this yoga move in the water is that you can stretch further than you would be able to with traditional yoga since there’s no floor in front of you.  To do this move:

  • Stand 2 feet or so away from the wall of the pool.
  • Place both your forearms and your hands against the wall, wrapping your fingers around the rim of the pool.
  • Without moving your feet, look up, lean back and increase the natural curve in your back so that your abs are stretched out.
  • Rise up so that you are on your toes, and hold for five breaths.

The Water Stork

Performing the stork in the water allows yogis to balance better, so you’ll get aSwimming Pool Exercise | Aqua Pool Co. Plus better, deeper stretch than if you were to perform traditional yoga.  To perform this move:

  • While standing, lift up your right leg so that it is straight yet with the knee bent.  Your toes should stay pointed.
  • With your left heel pressed into the pool’s floor, reach forward towards the big toe on your right foot with your right hand.  Slowly straighten out your right leg so that your entire leg is parallel to the bottom of the pool, and push your foot against your fingers for a deeper stretch.  Hold this for a few breaths.
  • Switch to your left leg, repeating the procedure above.

The Water Backbend

The natural buoyancy of the water makes performing the backbend in the pool easier than on land.  The result:  you’ll get a better stretch through your chest and your abs.  Here’s how you can perform this move:

  • Position yourself 2 to 3 feet away from the wall of the pool, facing away from the wall.
  • Look up and slowly arch your back backwards.  Raise your arms and reach out behind you.
  • Grab the wall and breath, making sure to hold the stretch.
  • Shuffle your feet backwards a few inches and then hold for a few breaths.

Fun Swimming Pool Facts from your Mississippi Pool Supply Store

While your Mississippi pool may be your first experience with a building a swimming pool, people have been building beautiful pools for centuries.

Swimming has long been heralded as something that simply must be learned as a life skill.  The “Great Bath” in Mohenjo-Daro (Pakistan) is believed to be the oldest pool in existence today, being dug sometime in 3rd millennium BC.  From as early on as 2500 BC, Grecians have been creating swimming pools as a safe area where young boys and men could learn to swim and train for military exercises and nautical games.  These boys were going for swims in some chilly waters, however, as the first heated swimming pool wasn’t created until 1st century BC by Rome’s first “patron of the arts”, Gaius Maecenas.

But though pools have been around for thousands of years, it wasn’t until after the 1896 Olympic Games that the swimming pool’s Fun Pool Facts from your Austin Custom Pool Builderpopularity began to spread around the globe.  England became home to several pools and swim clubs (such as the Temple Cowley Pool) and the Racquet Club of Philadelphia in the United States built one of the very first above-ground swimming pools.

Interest in swimming pools and competitive swimming continued to grow after World War I, with many Hollywood films then beginning to build and include pools in the backyards of luxurious homes.  As a result, a private residential pool in one’s backyard quickly became a status symbol.

Today, there are millions of pools in the backyards and homes of many Americans.  According to the International Aquatic Foundation, the USA is home to more than 4.5 million in-ground History of Custom Swimming Poolspools and over 3.5 million above ground pools (International Aquatic Foundation, 2004).  These pools are no longer just your standard rectangular lap pools, either.  Pool designers have gotten extremely creative with the different materials used for pools (such as fibreglass and vinyl), as well as the design of the pool itself.  A number of different water and lighting features can be added to almost any pool, such as beach entryways, waterfalls, faux rock grottos and even televisions and center-island fire pits.  No longer are pools simply a way to get some exercise – they can become a homeowners very own personalized piece of paradise.
